ADDIS ABABA – Having reaffirmed commitment to empowering women, ethio telecom staffers and various senior officials yesterday marked this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD). The day was celebrated under the theme: “Digital Inclusion for Gender Equality” and the company awarded outstanding female janitors on the occasion as well.
At the event, ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru said that the company has been taking various initiatives together with the community to discharging its socio-economic responsibilities to empower women in every aspect. “The role of women in keeping the city clean is enormous, but their level of mobile internet access rate lays merely 41 percent lower. ”
She indicated that ethio telecom has also been moving with various strategic plans and extending its social commitment in education, health, humanitarian aid support, green economy development, and in various development projects. While marking IWD, the company has surprised 353 female janitors drawn from 122 wordas in Addis Ababa giving smart phones.
Digital technology would be instrumental for those women in carrying out daily tasks and ensuring their equality and participation in the digital economy. The company has also prepared a package for women with additional 10 percent gift via Telebirr platform. So far, ethio telecom has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Addis Ababa Women Association to provide services for over 4,000 women in digital money exchange, financial support, technical and vocational services and others.
Last year, Ethio telecom had given 480 female students mobile phones at Menen Girls’ Boarding School. Also, it awarded tablets to 10 high scorer students, it was learnt.
