Every day is a great day to celebrate the amazing women in your life but, International Women’s Day (IWD) gives you an extra reason to celebrate. I would like to share a few words on the importance of International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th all around the world to honour the remarkable contribution of women in our society.
This day signifies to raise awareness and sheds light on the great achievement of women in various fields.
You can see, women reaching greater heights entering into all fields and are making success everywhere they go. As you know Ambassador Senedu Gebru was the first Ethiopian Women to take seat in Parliament in 1957.
She advocated complete parity between men and women, and known for her contesting articles in Civil Code that provided the husband with the right to choose the place. You do recall we recently celebrated ADWA on March 2nd and with that Etege/ Empress Taytu is always mentioned. Taytu is acknowledged to have wielded political power even before she was crowned Empress. She was always consulted by the Emperor prior to making important decisions, thus, she was a key player in the conflict over the Treaty of Wuchale with Italy, which she tore up. In this auspicious occasion, we should be inspired from our iron ladies like, Empress Zewditu, Empress Menen, to Segenet Kelemu and Sossina Haile to Tirunesh Dibaba who broke the bias and became the domino so that others can follow suit.
