Premier says Ethiopia remains key player in Africa’s peace

ADDIS ABABA- Ethiopia will remain a key player in Africa’s peace and stability and it will also help to seek solutions to problems in neighboring and other countries that may face unrest and conflicts, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said.

While addressing queries of the MPs yesterday, the Premier stated that Ethiopia has a desire to maintain its longstanding history of coordinating efforts with African brothers and sisters to keep the peace and stability of the continent. Noting Ethiopia’s efforts to restore peace and stability in Somalia and South Sudan, Abiy expressed his country’s commitment to extend its support in this regard.

As to him, this Ethiopia’s commitment for Africa’s cause is unaltered by regime changes. “When Tanzania became independent, they did not have a well-established air force and it was the Ethiopian air force, who were sent by Emperor Haileselassie, that protected the country’s air space.”

Not only being the leading actor for the establishment of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU), Ethiopia was also the only African founding member of the League of Nations, the predecessor of the United Nations. Also, Ethiopia stands in forefront to end the apartheid system in South Africa and has had a greater role in backing the African nations struggle for independence.

Notable African freedom fighters including Nelson Mandela received military trainings Ethiopia’s peace keeping forces have conduced successful missions in Congo, Korea and others. The renowned Ethiopian sportsman Yidnekachew Tessema played a notable role in the fight against colonialism and mobilize Africans for common cause in his capacity as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the PM remarked.
