ADDIS ABABA- Ethiopia’s Somali state has faced the worst drought that caused worsening humanitarian situation for millions of people , Chief Administrator of the state said adding that his administration is using all resources to rescue lives.
According to the recently released report from UN , about 3.5 million people in Somali state are waiting for humanitarian assistance due to the already deteriorating drought.
The Ethiopian Today has also reported that the chief administrator of Somali state, Mustafa Muhammad has said that the drought is the worst in 40 year.
According to Mustafa , the government has responded on time to the immediate impact of the drought by providing humanitarian assistance. “We will also continue to work assiduously to lessen the effect of the drought on the people, but the situation is dire.”
“The local government is using all the resources of the state to the drought response. It will also derail ongoing large-scale development initiatives that have long-term and transformative effects for our communities,” he added.
While quoting additional information from the office of Mustafa, The Ethiopian Today has stated that an estimated one million livestock have also died across 10 drought affected zones in Somali region. Livestock across the region are in poor health and many more are expected to perish from the upcoming rainy season.
In related news, Ethiopian Ambassador to UN, TayeAtske Selassie has twitted that United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and European Union have pledged to donate 1.4 billion USD for immediate live saving response to avert loss of life in the Horn of Africa.
“We are grateful to countries who deliver in their promised support. Ethiopia will use all means to save lives and chart a lasting solution,”Amb. Taye tweeted.
