For the last four years, Ethiopia has been under the new government that is optimistic to see a prosperous country that is suitable to its citizens. The previous oligarchs were removed from office by a popular unrest. The desire for changes was equally embraced by a certain team from within and the ouster of the oligarchs had become unstoppable. Neither the series of sham redresses, nor the use of live ammunitions did stop the people. Particularly, the youths in various parts of the country had been taken to streets to demand the respect of their economic and political rights.

The reformist government-led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has come to the fore eventually. The government has achieved myriads of successes in a relatively shorter period despite challenges brought up from internal forces as well as imposed from external powers mostly from the western powers.

Peace and security in the region is among the key achievement of the government. The dramatic progress made and the success ensued in breaking a-two decade no-war-no peace situation is a notable one. The government has also gone a long distance to materialize peaceful relation with almost all neighboring countries except few ones.

The government, after appointing the new premier, has made magnificent changes regarding strengthening the democratic process. In the first year of the reform government, thousands of prisoners were released. And opposition groups previously designated as terrorists were removed from the list. Following the peaceful hands stretched forth to the opposition groups, many of them have come back home and have joined the peaceful struggle.

Aiming to reach lower – middle income status , the new leadership also made remarkable progresses in the economic sphere. Sectors that were restricted to foreign investment have now been opened with the expectation that this will attract more investment into services, IT, tourism, education and healthcare.

Under the new government, environmental concerns received substantial consideration. Launched by Prime Minister Abiy, Ethiopia’s national reforestation program has become yet another milestone. The initiative has also expanded to a level of supporting neighboring countries to involve in the program.

Project accomplishment was also among the areas the government has given due attention. Many projects including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam were launched previously but delayed for long as a result of poor management consuming the country’s capital in vein. The reformist government has taken corrective measures with commitment and disciplined management to accomplish some projects and shown remarkable progress.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a living witness in this regard. It was almost on the verge of stopping because of poor and corrupted management. With a radical change in the project, it began generating power recently. As being constructed by own treasury, it is the manifestation of economic independence for poor country like Ethiopia.

When observing the 11th anniversary of its launching, Ethiopians are showered with joy seeing their concerted effort began bearing fruit. This success serves as a spring board to finalize the projects under construction and to launch new ones. Amid challenges, hanging up its past achievements, the government needs to address other major problems of the country.
