ADDIS ABABA – Numerous ethnic Amharas in Welkait-Tegede and Telemt have been persecuted and killed by TPLF forces for over four decades, so said eyewitnesses.

Fanos Mintesinot, who has been a resident of Welkait since her birthday, leads harsh life as TPLF killed all her supporters. She said, “Life here for me is tantamount to be a dead body as I am devoid of siblings due to TPLF merciless killings.”

Fanos’ grandson, Nigat Andargie, is one of the victims of the torture and untold misery of the TPLF. “He was killed because of speaking his mother tongue, Amharic language, and his being uninterested in speaking Tigregna. He was trying to create a good atmosphere for all Amharas there,” she told local media in a touchy sullen.

Fanos always cries over the death of her grandson, Nigat, and the disappearance of her daughter due to TPL F in her shabby hut alone, as to local media.

“I have got exhaustively tired and even no one supports me. Life here for me has become devastating and too complicated to deal with,” she said.

Demeke Zewudu, said when TPLF crossed Tekeze River and came to Welkait in 1971 E.C, the people of the area opposed its coming as they knew their anti-Amhara stance.

Even though Amharic language is an official and working language throughout the country, it has been causing death in Welkait-Tegede, Telemt, he said.

According to Demeke, the people of the area have been killed and suffering from a number of atrocities under the regime of TPLF for over 40 years because of their identity; the worst happened in the land of Welkait-Tegede, Telemt.

Welkait Border and Identity Requisition Committee Advisor, Gebeyaw Lakew, on his part said those people of Amhara who opposed TPLF forces have been killed, tortured and harassed. All have been sought and killed; this inhumane atrocity has to be revealed to the international community.

He said: “No other reason can be cited for TPLF invasion of Welkait-Tegede, Telemt except the area’s strategic and economic benefits. Strategically, it is a border area to get connected to other parts of the world; economically it is a fertile land to produce what is given, and they ultimately want to incorporate the area and form Tigray Republic.”

Another witness, Kelemework Daget, Resident of Welkait (priest), said TPLF claimed the area as they said it belonged to them and to regain the sovereignty of Tigray via relinquishing Amhara superiority.

“A number of people of Welkait lost lives merely the hostility TPLF leftovers developed against them. Many youth have been killed and a number of mass graves are here and there, but the international community has deliberately ignored the untold atrocities and inhumane actions though their mission is not yet clear.”
